Our Relationship

As a trainer, I think of myself as an intermediary. I can not make anyone learn anything. I can only listen, observe, advise, make suggestions and make my knowledge base (and the knowledge I have acquired from my mentors) available to my clients. My job is to create a safe space where the student and I can have an open, honest, egoless dialogue about the issues and try to creatively find the best solutions for horse and owner/rider that work within the existing parameters.

The student is responsible for the learning that is taking place. You help me understand how you best learn. Maybe you are the type of student who thrives with loads of verbal input during a lesson. Maybe you prefer tidbits to chew on and process on your own. Possibly you are a combination of both or go back and forth. (That is OK and totally normal.)

So often students have a breakthrough moment days after a lesson, or on their own after working on concepts they have learned in a lesson. I have learned that my job is to be a conduit for learning and growing. It’s the students’ job to take what they need, in the way that works best for them and do something with it.

Philosophy

With horses, as in life, there is no blueprint. Each horse and horse/owner combination are unique with numerous factors outside our control; physical, emotional, financial, time constraints, etc. Trying to manage all the variables together (horse and human alike) into a tidy package called goals allows for failure points in the thousands.

Both horses and humans have predictable, demonstrable behaviors. However, when plans + horses + humans combined and layered with stress, fear, anxiety, joyous or catastrophic life, events, pressures, deadlines, financial implications and expectations, the points of failure are in the billions.

It is not that the end goal is unimportant, but the small actions that happen every single day are the catalyst to reaching your summit. Each little moment feels insignificant, but when taken cumulatively over a long period of time, progress is made and goals are reached. It is like trying to watch a flower bloom. You never actually see anything happening.

What is most important to me about A Squared Equestrian is to create a space and an environment where people and horses can thrive. energetically. We spend too much money and time for this activity not to be rewarding on a day-to-day basis. I am not talking about reaching goals here but about enjoying the moments on the journey.

Often when we ride – train – board in environments that do not resonate with us energetically, we feel unheard, ignorant, diminished or at the very least frustrated and exhausted.

We question ourselves. We question our horse. We blame. Most importantly, we lose. We lose the openness. We lose the trust, we lose the joy, we lose the connection to all of our very own personal whys.

Why we ride.

Why we train.

Why we go broke.

Why we sacrifice time.

Why we sacrifice peace.

I have felt marginalized countless times in the industry. I have chased a finish line of feeling heard, accepted, worthy and capable. I now understand these feelings of connection, balance and space are transient.

Like Buddhist nun Pema Chodron says:

“We think the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things really don’t get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and they fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

The humans and horses that fit best at A Squared Equestrian recognize these descriptions.

I do not believe there is the perfect horse, the perfect saddle, the perfect trainer, or the perfect method. There is a dynamic fluid of energetic liquidity that must be supported by the right team. To achieve what the owner seeks and what the horse needs there must be a cohesiveness with everyone involved in progress to the goal. The riders, owners, teachers, students, grooms, bodyworkers, vets, dentists, Farriers, Chiropractors, saddle fitters, and on and on, and on must work in concert towards the goal. The goal can be anything from a quiet horse that stands willingly immobile at the mounting block for a hack to a highly ambitious horse and rider that navigate an electric warm-up before their first FEI test.

Collaboration

Collaboration is rooted in effective communication; being present and listening to an open exchange of ideas. We will discuss what has worked in the past and what has not. We will do our best to anticipate obstacles, the literal and figurative, and work to move through them. We will remain flexible in our approach as we assess what is needed to keep moving forward towards the end goal.

When I am teaching and connecting with a student that is open, receptive, trusting and ready, incredible shifts take place. Fears are overcome, nerves are managed through comprehension of theory, execution of exercise and delivery that is based in patience and a fierce love of championing the horse and rider connection.

Next Steps

1st – Fill out the intake form.

2nd – Let’s talk, either on the phone or on zoom!

3rd – Within a few days of our conversation, I will be in touch with my specific recommendations for you, your horse(s) and your goals based on what we have discussed.

4th – If we’re both a yes to the plan we’ve created together, the last step will be to sign the training contract and get started!

The intake form has been created to help us take the next step. This is not a commitment. It just helps me understand your current situation, you and your horse’s needs and goals, and how we can best proceed.

 A Squared Equestrian Grace Period

In the interest of making sure the environment and the program at A Squared is a good fit for all parties involved all new client agreements contain a 60 day grace period to ensure the suitability and compatibility of each new member in our program.

A Squared is a bespoke experience. The commitments between the owner/trainer and I are established, outlined and then revisited over 30-60 days to ensure compatibility and clarity surrounding our agreements.

We will set measurable benchmarks and clear commitments for everyone involved. The commitments can be revisited in the interest of moving forward. If either party finds the partnership lacks sufficient momentum towards our outlined goals, then the contract will be respectfully dissolved.

The grace period does not entitle you to a refund to services rendered.

Client Experiences

“Amy is an amazing educator!!!

I have been working with horses my entire life, competing in both hunters and jumpers; I am now a burgeoning professional trainer. When I first rode with Amy a few years ago, I didn’t have any particular troubles at that time that I knew of. In the first 5 minutes of the lesson it felt like she had known me and my horse for years and knew exactly what we needed. Even after years of experience with my mare and with other trainers, I had many eye opening moments during that lesson. I felt a remarkable improvement in how I was able to communicate with my horse.

Since that weekend, my barn has been lucky enough to host Amy several more times as a clinician, and I have continued to learn from her as both a rider and a trainer. She is so encouraging, passionate, and articulate.

Amy is a “puppet master”; she is able to use her words to get you to move your body so that you can communicate with your horse in a way that you didn’t even know was possible. She is passionate about her teaching and gets so excited when you achieve the task at hand. Her excitement and encouragement for even the smallest of wins is contagious! She is a penultimate teacher in that she can adjust her teaching styles to meet the needs of the rider/ horse, troubleshooting and trying different things in order to help the partnership get over their wall.“

“I have had the privilege of knowing Amy for over 10 years, and in that time, I've come to admire not just her skill and dedication as a dressage rider, but also the kindness and generosity she extends to everyone around her. She has helped me with both young horses and up to the FEI levels. Amy is a true horsewoman, with a deep connection to the animals she works with and a profound understanding of the art of dressage. Her commitment to each horse and riders is so evident in her teaching. She is able to think out side at box and adapted to each rider no matter the discipline.

I have enjoyed our friendship over the years and look forward to the future working together!“

“We had Amy visit with us this summer for a clinic and she tirelessly approached her plan for each student at the level they were at. We had everything from just started horses to PSG level and riders from the most confident professionals to those who started on day 1 of the clinic on the lunge line. Amy was fantastic at identifying the needs of each pair and finding ways to enhance their partnership by improving their connection and communication to reach their goals for each day. She is an effective and beautiful rider who shared with us both her love of horses and her unique ability to identify how to help improve riders skill and connection. Many of our riders asked to add in additional lessons after their first ride with her a she graciously agreed to fill the schedule with those who wanted more! She involved the auditors in explanations and discussions and was so warmly received we have asked her back for another clinic this fall.”

“I have known Amy for over 8 years and she is the ultimate equestrian. She is a skilled rider /trainer/ instructor. I was very frustrated with myself and my horse until I met Amy. Amy has a passion for educating the horse and the rider no matter their level! She is able to communicate the 'what and the why' to make you a better rider. I was always in awe of Amy telling me what muscles to use and what that meant to Sansao. Amy has a kind attitude towards training both the horses and us uncoordinated humans. Her training is spot on and there is always improvement in any horse after she rides! My stallion partner Sansao and I couldn't be happier!!”
